Every once in awhile I get the awesome opportunity to work as part of a group of professionals on a really awesome event. Runway for Charity, a fashion event hosted by A.K. Rikk’s to benefit the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital here in Grand Rapids was one of these. This year’s event had a vintage “Under the Big Top” style circus theme, and in addition to the aerialists, jugglers, stilt walkers, and other attractions, I was asked to be their clown by the group headlining the performance side of the event, Grand Rapids’ own Daredevil Circus. Due to the “vintage” style of the event this was different than anything I had ever done before as a clown. I had to perform in white face (never done that before, I pretty much consider myself an Auguste through and through), I had to wear one of the vintage jumpsuit and neck ruffle costumes that so many modern clowns try so hard to separate themselves from, and my actual performance was restricted to sort of a sideshow style balloon twister for people to look at as they walked by.
Even so, it was a beautiful event for a very important cause, the performances were stunning, I got to operate outside of my normal box, and I was seriously honored to be part of such an elite group of performers. I will treasure the memory for years to come!
